Some thoughts on health and healthcare

From 22 until 26 May 2023, the first UHasselt Summer School on Big Data for Health and Care was organized by Liesbet M. Peeters and her team of the  Research Group in Biomedical Data Sciences ( Big Data for Health and Care - Summer School ). The Summer School gave some fascinating insights on the potential of big data to revolutionize the way we approach healthcare challenges. The increasing availability of healthcare data will have the potential to gain new insights into disease prevention, diagnosis, crisis management, and treatment. Consequently, the power of big data in healthcare can make a meaningful impact on patient outcomes and how we deal with our healthcare challenges on a national and European scale.   Evolutie van verschillende Omicron-varianten van het SARS-CoV-2 virus in België tot week 23 van 2022 (bronnen ECDC en GISAID).

 In Antwerpen wordt er tegen de sterren op geboosterd met het oog op de oprukkende Omikronvariant. Trots op het werk van Dr. Jan Stroobants  (ZNA-spoedarts, coördinator van VacCovid), de stad Antwerpen en alle medewerkers en de vele vrijwilligers die dit allemaal mogelijk maken ( Het Antwerpse boosteren gaat zo snel dat het een ‘internationaal voorbeeld’ zou moeten zijn ).  

M.i. gaan we met COVID-19 van een epidemische naar een endemische fase en moeten we ons voorbereiden op een transformatie van ons publieke gezondheidszorgsysteem (coördinatie & capaciteitsmanagement, surveillance, robuuste en tijdige 'health data', NPI's, vaccinatiestrategie, ...).

  Na de COVID-19 epidemie komt de COVID-19 endemie, een evenwicht tussen ons gedrag, onze (groeps-)immuniteit en de evolutie (mutaties) van het SARS-CoV-2 virus. Na de acute fase van de epidemie komt er ook in toenemende mate de fase van de long covid patiënten, met alle maatschappelijke gevolgen die daaraan vasthangen.

Alhoewel tijdens de derde COVID-19 golf in België minder mensen in het ziekenhuis terechtkwamen, werden er in verhouding meer mensen opgenomen op intensieve zorgen (ICU). Variant B.1.1.7 (WHO Alpha) was de dominante variant tijdens deze derde golf.    

The European Union is remarkably absent as a coordinating and operational force in the current COVID-19 crisis. Why can't Europe coordinate the healthcare emergency caused by COVID-19? The reason for this is hidden deep into the roots of the European Union. We want Europe 'ma non troppo' and then we blame Europe for not being capable to act. Is there a way to create a European public and personal healthcare ecosystem, serving our European patients and our healthcare workers in a time of this COVID-19 crisis and beyond? Not within the limited framework of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU, aka The Treaty of Rome) and the Treaty on European Union (The Maastricht Treaty).
